Fun strategies for practicing high frequency words with your child |
WORD BAM -Make cards out of the words and write "BAM" on a few of the cards instead of high frequency words. Pull cards out of the cup (coffee cans work great) and if your child knows it he/she gets to keep it. If your child doesn't they'll put it back in the cup. If a player pulls the "BAM" card out then he/she has to put all of their cards back into the cup.
SHAVING CREAM WORDS -Put shaving cream on the table (I buy cheap dollar store shaving cream) and tell him/her words. Have him/her spell them with her finger right into the shaving cream. WORD HUNT -Print or write the words on paper and put them around the house. Tell your child that you're going on a word hunt, like a scavenger hunt. Give him/her clues to help him/her find words or read words. WORD BUILDER -Make or buy letter tiles (you can use them from scrabble) and practice building words. Tell your child the word "at" and have him/her build it with the letter tiles. LETTER BEADS – Buy letter beads and string. Write the words on flash cards. Your child will pick a word card and then search the beads in order to find the letters and create a word necklace. |
